Elk Grazing at Missing Moose Lake

In 2002, the inn - working with the Army corp. of Engineers and the Montana Fish and Game Dept. - completed a wetland restoration project.   This resulted in Missing Moose Lake, a 7-acre lake for migratory waterfowl. Guests, while dining at the Inn, have been entertained by a variety of critters utilizing the Lake.  These include bald eagles, diving osprey, herons, swimming elk, river otters, families of ducks and geese, black bears and of course, moose

During the spring, summer and fall, the 400-acre grounds surrounding the Inn boast groomed nature trails.  Located in beautiful northwest Montana, the area is Montana's only "rain forest".

A spectacular variety of birds, trees and wildflowers abound.  While hiking the gentle trails, you can spot a variety of wild mushrooms, wild strawberries, wild grapes and 5 varieties of wild berries - including the highly prized wild huckleberries.  The abundance of indicator species of dragon flies, butterflies and croaking frogs transport you back to a time free from the pollution that has wiped these species out in many areas of our country.

During winter, Amber Bear Inn is a spectacular destination for snow shoeing and cross-country skiing.  Additionally, the grounds provide a Winter Haven for a large heard of wild elk - easily viewable from the Inn's country-cozy dining areas.

Green Gables, Lovers Lair and Musical Bears. - Three of the Inn's bedrooms boast in-room fireplaces and jetted tubs for-two for a perfect winter retreat.

The Inn is a beautiful, tranquil place now, but the grounds have, at times, harbored sinister activity.  Originally a homestead for ranching families, the fabled Old West range wars over water rights, fence lines and access easements have raged for decades.  An abandoned gold mine borders the property and is rumored to be the failed efforts of Chinese immigrants, now long-gone.  During the 1920's, a spring on the property, known as Brewer's Creek, supplied water for a bootlegging operation.  During the 1970's, the property was a hangout for hippies invading this quiet, hard-working, religious ranching community with their counter-culture lifestyles.  Amber Bear Inn was built and is owned by the Masten family.  A fourth generation Montana family, the Masten's originally came to Montana from Minnesota, homesteading in Roundup, Montana, over 100 years ago.  Both Michael and Nancy Masten oversee the operations of the Inn.
